DULUTH, Ga. -- Dr. Peter Lemonds was recently named Georgia's top teacher by the American String Teachers Association.

The Duluth High School orchestra co-director has nearly 30 years of teaching experience. He also works as lead teacher for school orchestras throughout Gwinnett County.

Lemonds earned his doctoral degree in musical arts from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He also holds a master's degree in music from Louisiana State University and bachelor's degrees in psychology and music from the University of the South.

Before working in Gwinnett County, Lemonds was a professor at Emory University, Agnes Scott College and the University of Southern Mississippi. He has performed as a cellist and conductor in a number of countries, including England, France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Mexico.

Lemonds received Yale University's Yale Distinguished Music Educator award in 2011 and was named one of "50 Directors Who Make a Difference" by School Band and Orchestra magazine in 2012.
