Fire in vacant house blamed on arson

DULUTH, Ga. -- Gwinnett County Fire officials say they believe arson is to blame for a Monday morning house fire in Duluth.

The blaze broke out at around 2 a.m. at a home on Cardinal Lake Circle, according to Gwinnett County Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge.

Crews determined the fire started in the basement of the home and burned a hole through the floor on the main level. Firefighters managed to get into the basement and put out the fire.

Nobody was living in the house. Rutledge said investigators are now trying to track down its owner.

"This is now an active arson case," Rutledge added. Investigators are not yet releasing specifics about the fire.

Arson is a felony and is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Georgia Arson Control, Inc., is offering a reward for anyone with information about who started the fire. Call 1-800-282-5804 with tips.
