Environmental Sustainability:

AWARD WINNER –Gwinnett County, Gas to Energy Project

With their new “Gas to Energy” system being built at the F. Wayne Hill Water Resources Center (WRC), Gwinnett County has developed a way to use the gases produced in the wastewater treatment process to reduce operating costs and sanitary sewer overflow within their plant. Using British Thermal Unit (BTU) digester gas, about 40 percent of the entire plant’s power needs can be supplied.

The savings created by this program, one of only 25 in the world, will help to balance the $35 million revenue shortage of 2008, which resulted from declining water consumption, drought restrictions and the recent overall economic downturn. In addition, the program has helped to drive energy efficiency within the plant above 80 percent by recovering heat from the generator and its exhaust.

Its innovation has caught the attention of various environmental agencies and eco-partnerships across the nation. The National Association of Clean Water Agencies invited staff from the facility to discuss their success at its annual spring conference.

A breakfast to honor the winners and finalists will be held at the Loudermilk Center for the Regional Community on Thursday, March 3 at 7 a.m. To register for the breakfast, visit ARC Online.
