Weekend Events: Festival on Ponce, Chelsea Handler and Suwanee Beer Fest

ATLANTA – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

This weekend, the Atlanta inTown paper will be hosting the Atlanta Summer Arts Festival: Festival on Ponce which will be held at Ponce de Leon Avenue and Moreland Avenue in Olmstead Park, in the North Druid Hills neighborhood. The festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday and it will feature an artist market, food and entertainment. Local acts Jeno and Kitty Wolf will take the main stage during the two day festival. Comedian Chelsea Handler will be performing at the Chastain Park Amphitheatre on July 22 at 8 p.m. Handler is returning to Atlanta, now, to perform a show that was postponed earlier this summer.

DISNEY CHANNEL'S FIRST NATIONAL DANCE TALENT SEARCH COMES TO MALL OF GEORGIA SAT JULY 23

Make Your Mark: Ultimate Dance Off – 'Shake It Up' edition," Disney Channel's first national dance talent search just for kids, hosted by AT&T U-verse, will make its mark at Mall of Georgia in Buford, Georgia. Kids ages 8-16, with the consent of a parent, will have the opportunity to show off their dance skills and record a dance video onsite for online submission for a chance to compete in a dance off to air on Disney Channel in October 2011. The grand prize includes a special guest dance spot on "Shake It Up" plus the chance to meet the cast. Fans and dance enthusiasts are invited to come down and participate in a Q&A with Roshon Fegan.

Now that summer is now in session and in addition to bringing warm weather, the new season has brought about a host of philanthropic events, all benefiting one of Atlanta’s favorite organizations: Bert’s Big Adventure. Back-to-school drive benefitting Metro Atlanta children in need

ATLANTA -- For over 80 years, Variety of Georgia’s mission has been to aid and enhance the lives of children in need who may be challenged by physical and/or mental disabilities, poverty, abuse or neglect.

Now through Tuesday, August 2, Variety of Georgia and Atlanta-area Simon malls will team up to collect back-to-school supplies for disadvantaged youth in the Metro-Atlanta area, giving young students the ability to enter a new school year full of hope.

School supply donations are welcomed at the following Atlanta malls: Gwinnett Place, Lenox Square, Mall of Georgia, Northlake Mall, Phipps Plaza and Town Center at Cobb.

WEEKEND EVENTS: Art Stroll, Yard Sales, Motley Crue and the Indigo Girls

ATLANTA -- There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

This weekend, the Castleberry Hill neighborhood will host their monthly Castleberry Hill Art Stroll at the Castleberry Point Condominiums. This event is sponsored by city councilman, Kwanza Hall and begins on Friday at 7 p.m. This week, the stroll will feature Denise Jackson’s Emerging Art Scene Gallery installations and The Wine Shoe will hold a $10 wine tasting. Food trucks will also be lined up in front of Castleberry Point. The corral will include: Tex’s Tacos, The King of Pops, Westside Creamery and the Pup Truck. The Castleberry Point Condos are located at 327 Nelson Street in Atlanta.

On Sunday, the Grant Park neighborhood will hold their first-ever Community Yard Sale starting on July 10.

LOCAL PROFILE: R&B Scene in Atlanta

ATLANTA – Derived from popular genres of music like jazz, blues and gospel, rhythm and blues was born. Rhythm and Blues music, which is widely referred to as R&B, is unique in that it has the ability to take on many musical identities, at once. Some say the genre was first identified in Harlem, during the Harlem Renaissance, which is known as one of the most prominent cultural movements for African Americans during the 1930’s. However, others think the genre originated in the 1940’s when African Americans began moving to northern cities, creating cultural fusion.  

The music evolved from “race music”, which was an offensive term that referred to the music of African Americans, into jump blues which was known for having a swing boogie, big band sound.
