Swimming class to host tribute to veterans

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The young synchronized swimmers at Collins Hill Park Aquatic Center are getting ready to host their fourth annual performance for veterans and military families.

The patriotic show will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.

The synchronized swimming group is made up of girls ages 8-14 who love to swim and are interested in honing their water skills in a creative way. Their Nov. 3 show is free and will be followed by a short reception.

DULUTH, Ga. -- JapanFest Weekend will be held on September 15-16, 2012, from 10 am to 6 pm (Saturday) and 10am to 5pm (Sunday) at the Convention Center at Gwinnett Center (located at 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway, Duluth, GA 30097). They have introduced their headlining act, Yoshi Amao from New York City who will be performing authentic Japanese Samurai sword fighting. Sam's Club offering free diabetes screenings

ATLANTA -- Several Sam's Club Pharmacy locations throughout metro Atlanta will offer free diabetes and vision screenings this weekend.

The screenings will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and are valued at more than $150. They include glucose, A1C, vision, blood pressure and BMI tests.

"Knowing the links between risk factors, choices and solutions prepares our members to better manage or even prevent diabetes," Sam's Club Health and Wellness senior VP Jill Turner-Mitchael said in a statement.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say about 1.9 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed every year. If this trend continues, one out of every three U.S. adults will have diabetes by 2050.

Diabetes is also the leading cause of new cases of blindness in U.S. adults, according to the CDC.

Eat at la Madeleine, help No Kid Hungry

ATLANTA -- La Madeleine Country French Café is making it easy for customers to help hungry kids.

The restaurant chain has teamed up with Share Our Strength to support its annual fundraiser, Dine Out for No Kid Hungry.

"It is tragic that there are kids in our own communities going to bed hungry when there is a solution," la Madeleine president and COO Phil Costner said in a statement. "This is why the la Madeleine family has joined the ranks of those who can and are doing something about it."

From Wednesday, Sept. 5 through Saturday, Sept. 22, la Madeleine customers who donate at least $1 to No Kid Hungry will receive a free triple chocolate peppermint cookie.

A $5 donation will score customers a coupon booklet featuring $20 worth of coupons for la Madeleine favorites, such as bakery treats and the chain's famous tomato basil soup.

Gwinnett Center to host PROBE College Fair

DULUTH, Ga. -- A national college fair is on its way to Gwinnett County.

The Gwinnett Center will host the PROBE College Fair from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19.

About 70 colleges, universities and technical colleges will be represented at the fair. All Gwinnett County high school students and their parents are welcome to attend.

Admission is free, but pre-registration is required. To sign up, visit the PROBE College Fair website and click "register now." Students must bring their completed registration pass in order to get into the fair.

Atlanta Rhythm Section to headline Duluth Music Festival

DULUTH, Ga. -- The Atlanta Rhythm Section will be the headlining act at the third annual Duluth Music Festival.

The Atlanta-based ARS has been part of the Southern rock scene for more than 30 years and have put out 15 albums of original material. Their biggest hits include "So Into You," "Champagne Jam," "Imaginary Lover" and "Spooky."
