Atlanta Rhythm Section to headline Duluth Music Festival

DULUTH, Ga. -- The Atlanta Rhythm Section will be the headlining act at the third annual Duluth Music Festival.

The Atlanta-based ARS has been part of the Southern rock scene for more than 30 years and have put out 15 albums of original material. Their biggest hits include "So Into You," "Champagne Jam," "Imaginary Lover" and "Spooky."

The Duluth Music Festival will be held from 2 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25 in historic downtown Duluth. In addition to three stages of music, there will be food for sale and a Kids Zone with family-friendly activities. Admission is free.

This program will take place Friday, September 21, from 7:30-9 a.m. at the Gwinnett Chamber’s 1818 Club (6500 Sugarloaf Parkway, Duluth, GA 30097). Attendees will learn about the latest advancements in joint replacement from two physicians who are experts in their field, as well as have the opportunity to win great door prizes!

The two innovations being discussed will be:

  • Anterior Total Hip Replacement procedure, presented by Mary Jo Albert, MD
  • iTotal Knee Replacement implant, presented by Gary Levengood, MD

Both doctors will be available for a Q&A session following their presentations.

Japan Fest 2012 Planning Committee Underway!

ATLANTA -- JapanFest Weekend will be held on September 15-16, 2012, from 10 am to 6 pm (Saturday) and 10am to 5pm (Sunday) at the Convention Center at Gwinnett Center (located at 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway, Duluth, GA 30097). Pictured above is the planning committee consisting on Marilyn Pearlman, Mariko Masui, Yoko Harrison, Sachi Koto, Yoshi Domoto, Maki Murahashi and Kaori McEwen. 

JapanFest, now in its 26th year, typically draws crowds exceeding 19,000. Organized by JapanFest, Inc., JapanFest is designed to promote understanding between Japanese and Americans in the Southeast.

Tickets are $8. Children age 6 or younger free. Teachers can bring their students to JapanFest for free by applying online at www.japanfest.org. Larger organizations can save money by purchasing advanced ticket packages online.

Deal to speak at drug court graduation

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- A graduation ceremony for the Gwinnett County Drug Court is set to have some notable speakers.

Gov. Nathan Deal, Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice George Carley and Gwinnett County Chairwoman Charlotte Nash are set to speak at the graduation Friday.

The ceremony will be held in the courtroom of the state supreme court in Atlanta.

Gwinnett County Superior Court Judge William M. Ray II will hand out diplomas. He has presided over the drug court since its founding seven years ago.

Six people are set to graduate.

Cops on Doughnut Shops to benefit Special Olympics

ATLANTA -- Nine metro Atlanta Krispy Kreme doughnut shops will participate in this year's Cops on Doughnut Shops fundraiser for Special Olympics.

From 6 a.m. on Friday, June 8 until 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, local law enforcement officers will be on the roofs of the Krispy Kremes, where they will eat, sleep and play while collecting donations from customers.

The money raised during Cops on Doughnut Shops will go to the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Georgia.
