Gwinnett hotel shooting victim dies, suspect ID'd

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- The man who was shot during a party at a Duluth hotel last week has died, and police believe they have identified his killer.

The shooting happened June 11 at around 2 a.m. at the Quality Inn at Pleasant Hill Road and Venture Drive, just off Interstate 85.

Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Jake Smith said 23-year-old Paris Brown was struck in the chest by a bullet after shots rang out during the party. Friends drove Brown to a nearby hospital, where he later passed away.

Police collected a number of shell casings in the hotel's parking lot and roped off a whole section of cars. Investigators executed a search warrant on the hotel room where the party occurred; they said the room was trashed. They also said party guests did not cooperate with the investigation.

Kitten taken in stolen car found

A stolen kitten in desperate need of surgery has been found alive. The six-week-old cat was being taken to a vet for eye surgery Wednesday when the vehicle it was in was stolen near Perimeter Mall.

Police later found the car at an apartment complex in southwest Atlanta but the kitten was no where to be found. A neighbor found it Thursday morning.

Veterinarians will likely attempt the surgery on Monday to give the kitten a few days to rest.

Duluth police: Kids found safe; father taken into custody

DULUTH, Ga. -- Two children reportedly abducted by their father were found safe late Thursday night, according to Duluth police. The children's father was taken into custody.

Authorities had issued the Levi's Call for 10-year-old Zailan J Blue and 14-year-old Jaquez Z. Blue after they were taken from their home by their father, John Daniel Blue.

Duluth Police Detective Johnson says at 10:30 a.m., a Division of Family and Children's Services worker went to the home of the children's father to take the kids into state custody. Both the mother and father of the children were reportedly uncooperative, and John Daniel Blue put the children in the van, rammed the state worker's car several times and drove away.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- A pair of recent high school graduates may get parents re-thinking their children's future plans.

Jorge Gonzalez and David Chavez have each won $34,000 scholarships because they know how to repair cars. They're also learning skills for jobs currently in demand.

The pair are representing Georgia in the Ford/AAA Auto Skills Competition taking place in Detroit, Michigan this week.

They took automotive classes at Maxwell High School in Gwinnett County and beat nine other Georgia teams to win the state title and scholarships, plus coveted tools for working on vehicles.

The pair are coached by teacher Max Chavez (not related to David), who says the Detroit competition involves each team trying to diagnose and repair vehicle pre-set with problems.

"They'll (contest organizers) set faults on the car so it would be simulating the customer showing up at a repair shop," said Max Chavez.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- In response to the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a local fire and emergency department is adding some major safety equipment.

The Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services is adding body armor and quick response field medical kits to their equipment.

Firefighters want to be first responders and the first ones in the building during dangerous situations, but without the right equipment, it's just not safe.

Gwinnett County of Fire and Emergency Services is investing more than $300,000 to make sure they're employees are prepared and protected to run in to active shooter scenarios.

The money comes from the department's operating budget, and was just approved Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters are already using new and improved field medical kits, which weigh just a pound and a half. Their day-to-day bags weigh more than 40 pounds.
