LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- A veteran soccer coach has been chosen to lead the new women's soccer program at Georgia Gwinnett College.

Domenic Martelli comes to Gwinnett with 18 years of Division I coaching experience. He spent the last 12 seasons at Georgia State University, where he quickly became the winningest coach in school history.

"It's thrilling to be a part of what is beginning to take place at GGC," Martelli said. "This is a golden opportunity -- a college growing academically, technologically and, of course, athletically."

Martelli, a native of Newburgh, N.Y., played soccer at the Ohio State University, where he also earned a bachelor's degree in business administration. He began his collegiate coaching career at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point before coming to Georgia State in 2000. He has also served as an Olympic Development Program staff coach, recruiting and coaching soccer throughout Metro Atlanta.

"We are certainly excited to have Dom here at GGC to lead our women's soccer program," said Darin Wilson, GGC director of athletics. "He brings a wealth of collegiate soccer experience as well as various soccer connections throughout the Metro Atlanta area."

In addition to men's and women's soccer, GGC plans to offer softball, baseball and tennis by the 2012-2013 school year. The college has applied to be part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
