WEEKEND EVENTS: National Public Gardens Day, kiln opening and Spring Fling

ATHENS, Ga. – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

To commemorate National Public Gardens Day, sponsored by the Rain Bird and American Public Gardens Association, nationwide gardens are offering free admission with a coupon printout, which can be found here. The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, located in Athens, is accepting these coupons. The Garden is located about three miles south of the University. The address is 2450 South Milledge Avenue in Athens.

Visit Vines Garden in Loganville on Sunday May 7 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. for National Train Day at Vines Garden. This event is being presented by Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation. Engineers will be on hand holding information sessions on trains at the largest railroad in the Southeast.

WINDER, Ga. – Go outside and be a kid, again, at the Fort Yargo State Park. The park, which is located between the capitol city and the land-o-Bulldogs, is a popular among city dwellers who want to a getaway.  

This park was built for the outdoor enthusiast. Visitors can take advantage of the parks eighteen mile biking and hiking trails, the 260-acre lake and wooded disc golf course. The lake offers swimming, kayaking, fishing and boating; so there’s something for everyone.

The park also has a campground and three cottages that rent for $130, each. Those who wish to rent a boat may do so for a minimal fee and others can play miniature and dish golf for $4 and under. The facility also is home to two tennis courts.

Upcoming Events: On May 7, the park will host the Dirty Spokes Mountain Bike Race from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.

Duluth PD to hold open house on Highway 120 projects

Duluth, Ga. -- (submitted by Duluth Police) On March 24, 2011at Duluth City Festival Center located at 3142 Hill Street, Duluth, Georgia 30096, the Georgia Department of Transportation and City of Duluth will hold a Public Information Open House concerning the Highway 120 Re-Alignment, Highway 120 Sidewalks and Highway 120 Gateway Projects.

The proposals to respectively, widen SR 120 from Buford Hwy to Hill St; construct 5-foot wide sidewalks along SR 120 from the intersection of SR 13/ US 23/Buford Highway and SR 120/Duluth Highway west to Main Street, north along Main Street, then west along Abbotts Bridge Road to Hill Street; & provide pedestrian facility improvements at the intersection of SR 120 and SR 13/US 23 .

The purpose of this Open House is to provide the public with an opportunity to view the proposed project, ask questions, and comment on the proposal.

The Open House will be conducted between the hours of 5:00 p.m.

County Gets Boost In Funds For State Route Widening

LAWRENCEVILLE – (submitted by Gwinnett County Transportation) The Board of Commissioners approved an addendum to an agreement with Georgia DOT that will allow the County to accept an additional $28 million in funding for right-of-way acquisition to widen SR 20/Cumming Highway near Sugar Hill from Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to the Chattahoochee River.

The County received $11 million in federal and state funds in October 2010 to purchase right-of-way and easements from approximately 200 properties located along State Route 20. The County is funding land acquisition services associated with the project and acquisitions are now underway.    

This is the last of three projects to replace the only remaining two-lane sections of State Route 20 in Gwinnett.

County Offices Closed for Presidents Day

LAWRENCEVILLE -- (Gwinnett County) All Gwinnett County government offices, with the exception of those operations required for the comfort and safety of the citizens of the county, will be closed Feb. 21 for the Presidents Day holiday. All offices will resume regular working hours on Feb. 22. A Magistrate Court judge will be available at the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

Presidents Day is not a trash and recycling holiday; haulers will follow the normal trash and recycling schedule the week of Feb. 21.

Rte # 20 & 35 will not run service today, January 13th, 2011.

Rte # 40 is running with temporary detours; NO service on Atkinson Rd & Phillips Blvd.

Rte # 30 will start at 11am with a temporary detour; No service on US 29/Burns Rd Loop south of Indian Trail.

Rte# 10 is running with no detours from 7am-7pm

No Paratransit service for January 13, 2011.

City of Duluth Wins Award at GRPA Conference

The City of Duluth Parks and Recreation Department won first place for their unique park informational brochure and newly designed Duluth Life newsletter/activity guide at the 2010 Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) cCnference in Jekyll Island.

The GRPA was formed in 1945 as a private, non-profit Institution to support and promote the recreation and park industries within the state of Georgia. It is the only state organization that serves as an advocate for quality recreation and park areas, facilities, programs and services at the local level.
