GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- There's still time for parents to register their students for the Gwinnett County Online Campus (GOC) for the 2013-14 school year.

Signup, which is open to students in grades 4-12, will close Friday, May 3 and can be completed at gwinnettonlinecampus.com.

GOC is one of four charter schools within Gwinnett County Public Schools. It gives children the opportunity to study at home and at their own pace. GOC combines online and face-to-face classes with the same curriculum found at traditional Gwinnett elementary, middle and high schools.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Horticulture students at Gwinnett Technical College will host a plant sale later this month and an edible sale next month.

The plant sale will be Apr. 16-18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the college's greenhouse.

Plenty of plant types will be sold, including annuals, perennials, shrubs, herbs and house plants.

The edible sale will be May 7-9 and will feature fruits, vegetables and herbs.

"I know every year we say the plant sale gets better, but the greenhouse is spectacular. The students have pulled together the best looking and the healthiest plants ever," Gwinnett Tech horticulture program director Aaron Poulsen said in a statement. "There are more varieties than we have time to list, and I think our supporters will be pleased."

Cash and checks will be accepted at the sale; those wishing to use credit and debit cards will have to pay in the school's business office.

Summer program to teach job skills to middle schoolers

LOGANVILLE, Ga. -- Gwinnett County Public Schools will host a special summer program for middle school students.

The Grayson High Technical Education program will give students the opportunity to explore a number of possible career paths, including culinary arts, robotics, photography, digital media design and video broadcast journalism.

The program will be held the week of June 10 at Grayson High School.

Rising 7th, 8th and 9th graders are invited to sign for the program beginning on Monday, Apr. 1. Registration closes on May 15.

College and Career Education Fair calls Gwinnett County students

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- Maxwell High School of Technology is hosting a College and Career Education Fair and inviting all local students to attend. 

The fair is set for Thursday, April 4 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Maxwell is located at 990 McElvaney Lane in Lawrenceville.

An official for Gwinnett County schools said the fair will have teachers and representatives on hand to explain how so many careers require different levels of education, and how core academic skills can help students be effective in their future workplaces. 

Along with all students of GCPS, also invited are parents, high school counselors, teachers and other educators.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- Gwinnett County Public Schools was recently named among the Best Communities for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants. 

The organization, according to a spokeswoman for GCPS, is a National Program that puts schools in the spotlight for outstanding commitment to teaching students about music. 

The spokeswoman said the Best Communities for Music Education survey acknowledges schools and districts across the country for their support and consistency in educating students on various aspects of music.

Over 100 Gwinnett Schools open books for 2013 Readers Rally

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- Students from more than 100 schools in Gwinnett County will take on the school district's reading event, the 2013 Readers Rally starting Saturday, March 16. 

That day, students compete in a literary quiz bowl at Berkmer High, where school levels match up and get cheers from school faculty and parents. An opening ceremony will kick off the Rally at 9:00 a.m., followed by the middle and high school competition at 10:00. 

After the first round, four elementary school teams, two middle school teams and two high school teams will move on to the final challenge. 

The Championship Readers Rally Competition will be held Thursday, March 21 at the GCPS TV studio in Suwanee. The event will be recorded, and shown on GCPS TV Monday, March 25 and Sunday, March 31 at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. 

 

 

Duluth HS instructor named top Ga. strings teacher

Duluth HS instructor named top Ga. strings teacher

DULUTH, Ga. -- Dr. Peter Lemonds was recently named Georgia's top teacher by the American String Teachers Association.

The Duluth High School orchestra co-director has nearly 30 years of teaching experience. He also works as lead teacher for school orchestras throughout Gwinnett County.

Lemonds earned his doctoral degree in musical arts from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He also holds a master's degree in music from Louisiana State University and bachelor's degrees in psychology and music from the University of the South.
